The Day of Bones has always been a special celebration. But there was once when it was not so joyous, and the Realms nearly came to an end...
STORY OF LORD SYTHEL
The story of the dragon Lord Sythel is one that is a legend that may or may not be true; his name has been stripped from the history books and torn from the memories of those still alive, save for echoes and mentions of his existence at all.
Here lay the only remnants of this story, so piece together what you will. Be wary, for sometimes the storied past can be more real than the present...
This is a story event, with chapters being unlocked after a certain amount of time and forum activity; have fun!
Many years ago, several thousand now, there was a dragon in his prime. He was large, a wyvern with black scales and silver plates, blue and purple markings prevalent across his neck, back, and tail. Large silver scutes covered his belly from throat to tail-tip, and plates of the same color coated his shoulders, half of his back, the top of his neck, and several other places besides.
Large, jagged black horns and spikes grew from these plates, as well as a set of forward-sweeping ones at his head, and a long spine at his chin. His eyes were golden and pupilless, and his talons and bottom fangs were both heavily overgrown. A single pair of wings, silver-webbed with two long thumbclaws, sprouted from his back.
He was named Sythel, a dragon of the dark element and the Wild Dragon on the great Vystrian Council. Though he served loyally, he held a dark secret; long after the hours of his service were complete for the day, he would retreat to a network of caverns deep underneath Albronel to study terrible, immoral things. Eventually, he began to practice the art of necromancy... and from then on, Lord Sythel was never the same.
Raising corpses, giving life to the dead, and entrapping spirits gave the Black a sense of power, and importance, far beyond that of the mortal worlds. He began small, as any; he would raise a rat or bird, tear away the soul of a snake, or breathe life into a freshly-slain squirrel. But soon, within a handful of years, he had begun to bring back much larger creatures, such as fellow dragons, a skeletal demon, and a half-rotted wolf, before his attention shifted.
In his studies, he had learned of the power of the soul and its role in life. How spirits and souls were the core of life itself, and even Realms ran from concentrated reiatsu. Therefore, he thought, if he could gather souls to him and take their power for himself... then perhaps he could even transcend the power of the royals - and that of the gods.
A ritual came to mind, one that he had read in a book many years ago. Finding it was easy, as it was a tome he had put aside for further study, though it was now covered in dust and cobwebs and old bits of bone. It required the blood of oneself, the blood of one's family, and the golden ties of the mind to be harnessed within spiritual energy; and the catalyst was to be the bones of one whom he was to love.
He had a mate, a weak dragoness that had been afflicted with bonerot for the last several decades. They'd had two hatchlings together, both of them now dead - and incidentally 'living' as skeletal creatures far beneath the White City. It was easy to lure her into the long caverns, locking away his love to fulfill his growing desire for more power. Killing her at this stage was simple, and harvesting her bones a menial task. When the ritual was complete, he held her skull in one clawed paw, spiritual energy pouring out of the sockets where the eyes once shone.
And then, placing the skull upon the altar, he summoned the kv'naer incantation and sliced open his other paw with a savage pull of his claws, bathing the skull of his mate in his blood. The incantation grew louder and louder, and a wail could be heard from the spirit in the rotting skull -
- and then light sheared outwards, flowing from the tunnels through the underground and out into the world of the sun-blessed earth up above...
