Previous Thread: The Corruptor Wakes

A small regiment of Faction of Hope soldiers marched towards the city of Ibenia. The night was calm and silent with a veil of snow shrouding the towers of the citadel in the distance. The sound of their march was silenced by the compacting snow beneath their feet. Their faces were grim and mournful of the loss of their fellow soldiers who fell to their deaths during their journey from Icemark. "Open the gate!" A voice echoed from atop the wall before the massive stone gate began to open. The thunderous sound of stone grinding against stone echoed through the mountains, and the soldiers passed through. Among them walked a red haired man dressed in formal attire not suited to the cold climate. Oddly, none of the guards or soldiers seemed to take notice of the man and averted their eyes from him. In the darkness, the man's emerald eyes shimmered with magic, and without confrontation he entered the city of Ibenia.

"Long has it been since i last laid eyes upon the Citadel." He spoke as he approached the first tier of the city. Entering the mountain, Vash looked upon the people who were conquered by the Faction of Hope. Their faces were cold. There was no kindness or strength left in their hearts that Vash could see as they walked past him through the great stone halls of Ibenia's interior. Vash looked upon a preacher standing on a wooden platform surrounded by Faction soldiers. He preached of faith in the Holy One, and made promises of a brighter future. Though it seemed no matter how much the man preached, the citizens saw no light in their tunnels. The Royal Family seemed powerless to save them, and their Lord was nowhere to be found in their time of need. All they could do was accept their fate, and obey the Laws laid out by their new overlords.

It did not take long for Vash to conclude that the Faction of Hope's hold on Ibenia was strong. Though its people were not totally under their control the military strength they possessed within the city was immense. Furthermore Ibenia was built like a fortress in a place that was naturally protected. It amazed him that they managed to capture the city to begin with. It was obvious that any effort he made to assault Ibenia would prove futile, but there were other ways to bring the Faction of Hope to heel.

"Within the confines of these walls they believe they are invincible, but even the mightiest creature can fall from the bite of vermin." Vash's emerald eyes quickly shifted to a vibrant crimson as he walked in to the shadow of an alleyway. "Go now creatures of the night, seek shelter and warmth in the homes of my enemies and spread your disease." from the Darkness came a horde of rats that scurried away in all directions. Shouts and screams could be heard as they made their way in to the streets. "Pray all you like to your One True God, Death has come and no God can save you now." The plague ridden rats filled every nook and cranny of the city, finding their way in to the homes of many of the citizens. They would breed and spread at an uncontrollable rate and within days the Black Plague would take hold of Ibenia.

Josh had been working all day and didn't even notice when the sun had gone down. He was busy dusting a self and cleaning around the shop. He didn't know a lot of people who liked to clean but he preferred it to having to do other things around the shop, like talking to the customers. He liked talking to some of them but only when he already knew them. Others just made him feel uncomfortable. He had hoped that when he got his job that meeting new people would be easier but it proved to be the opposite.

When he finished dusting the self he looked around. The shop was empty escape for the store owner who was looking tired. The owner was counting the money and it looked like he was ready to lock up for the night. They had stayed open longer than they normally did even though they didn't have very many customers. There were just things around the shop that needed to be done. "Well, I think it is about time for me to be heading home. I'll see you tomorrow," he said as he threw on his jacket.

As soon as Josh stepped outside he was greeted by the cold night air. He could barely see five feet in front of himself due to how dark it was and how hard it was snowing but by now he knew the path home by heart. He had made the journey enough times to know his way around. However, as he started walking he started feeling weak. It seemed colder than it normally did and the cold seemed to be sapping his energy. He fell against a wall and struggled to get back up. Josh knew that if he didn’t get home sooner, or somewhere warm he would die.

Somehow he found the strength to get back up and slowly he made it home. He got a fire going in the fireplace and sat in front of it. His house was pretty small. It was one room having everything that he needed. Once he was warm he attempted to get up but found that he was too weak to move. Josh decided that he must have caught something in the storm but he didn’t notice the rat scurrying along the wall.

Red eyes pierced through the veil of snow and darkness. The man with long red hair stood alone with his arms held behind his back in the middle of the street, watching from afar as the young man struggled to walk through the cold. A single rat scurried across the street as Vash watched the boy fall against a wall and barely catch himself. To his satisfaction the Plague seemed to be taking effect rather quickly. Vash's lips formed a smirk, and in the blink of an eye the Vampire transformed in to a swarm of bats and flew in to the darkness.

Upon the boy's arrival at his home, the swarm of bats would circle and wait for him to enter and upon his entry they would gather in front of the house to merge in to the Red headed man once more. Silently he glided towards the door and opened it, entering Josh's home to see him sitting helplessly upon his chair in front of the fire. Suddenly the door would slam shut behind Vash, but as soon as the boy would turn to see who had entered his home, there would be nobody there.

A shadow would blanket him, as Vash stepped in front of the flame gazing down at the helpless human with hunger in his eyes. "Have you not the strength to stand, boy? " He would ask, standing over him like some unholy apparition. "It appears an Illness has befallen you, one that will surely take your life." The man turned towards the fire, taking the iron poker in his hand and stoking the flame. "To whom will you pray?" He inquired.

Josh looked up at the intruder at a lost of words. He had no idea how he had gotten in or who he was. All he knew was that the man seemed to be looming over him. He didn't know how to answer the man's question or even if he could. Josh couldn't really understand the question or the purpose of them, just that the crimson haired man had asked them. He had to really focus on what the man had said and it took him a few moments before he truly understood what had been asked of him.

He could barely feel his limbs as he sat there looking up at the man. After a few moments he was able to speak. "Why pray? I...I doubt the gods will help me now." Breathing seemed harder for him now. It seemed strained. He pressed up with his arms with all of his strength and managed to get back up to his feet before stumbling back and having to use the wall for support.

"What... What are you doing here?" He struggled once again to speak and the words sounded hoarse. He had one arm against the wall and the other was picking at his arm weakly. His fear and nerves getting the best of him.
