The Day of Bones has always been a special celebration. But there was once when it was not so joyous, and the Realms nearly came to an end...
STORY OF LORD SYTHEL
The story of the dragon Lord Sythel is one that is a legend that may or may not be true; his name has been stripped from the history books and torn from the memories of those still alive, save for echoes and mentions of his existence at all.
Here lay the only remnants of this story, so piece together what you will. Be wary, for sometimes the storied past can be more real than the present...
This is a story event, with chapters being unlocked after a certain amount of time and forum activity; have fun!
Sythel’s evil spell tore silently through the skies, moving at a rapid pace like a malevolent assassin. As it did so, small orbs of golden light were periodically flung from it like loose debris, each one flying off in a different direction.
Each orb of magic had the same goal, seeking out settlements of dragons all across the realms, for that day was a special event among them; the Day of Bones, a remembrance of the long since past Bloodreign war in which many dragons, demons, and xeriin had perished. When all the conflict had ceased, there had been a mass cremation of the dead. A single skull remained afterward, still burning gently, and it was taken as a symbol to mark the ending of the great war. Since that day, dragons all over decorated their homes with the skulls of the first kills of their children in memorial.
It was these very skulls that the spell was seeking, and as it found them, it plunged into them, setting their sockets alight with a bright, golden glow. It did not take very long for a dragon to notice.
As a youngling of only a few years, the purple scaled dragon was rife with curiosity. It was no surprise, then, that a glowing skull caught his eye and drew him closer. He had never seen it do that before. It was beautiful too; it was as though there was a miniature constellation within it.
In fascination, he reached forward to touch it. The closer he got, the more fixated upon the glowing he was. It was hypnotic, as though the light was the only thing that mattered. All else seemed to fade into the background, and his peripheral vision darkened. And then, a sudden, searing pain erupted through him. It was as though his very being was being torn from him by an unnatural force, and yet he still could not look away!
Panic flooded his immobile form, but suddenly, a deep, aged voice called his name urgently, and he was catapulted back to reality. Staggering back from the skull with ragged breathing, he bumped into the large forepaws of his grandfather, an ancient dragon of stunning royal blue. After briefly questioning his grandson on what he had just experienced, and making sure he was well, he sent the youngling off to his mother, and directed his attention to the glowing skull grimly.
He thought he had recognized the malicious spell, and the description his grandson had given only confirmed his suspicions. It was one of pure evil, intended to steal away the very souls of those who ventured too close. Something needed to be done before someone got hurt. Spreading the word to keep well away from the skulls as he went, the elder retreated swiftly to his home, in which he kept an extensive collection of books on a wide range of topics. He knew he had a book that detailed a counter spell somewhere among them.
It didn’t take long for other dragons, concerned by the news, to come volunteering their help in looking for the solution. Between himself and three younger adults, the appropriate book was soon in the elder’s claws. Wasting no time, he returned to the still-glowing skull that had almost taken his grandson, and opened the book, reading the words to counter its power.
Snapping it shut decisively as he finished, he watched as the light flickered erratically, then went out. All the other skulls around the town followed suit, blinking as though they were trying to fight to remain, but inevitably failing.
Word was sent across the Realms on dragon wings; the spell was repeated by many draconic mages, and the power of the skulls dimmed and died. For the moment, the elder was satisfied that his job was done. But still...the very fact that the spell had been sent out by someone concerned him deeply. No-one cast such a spell lightly. He had a horrid feeling that this wasn’t fully over yet...
