Dulna, meaning axe beak, were flightless birds resembling ostriches with a powerful neck and a very large head with a beak not unlike a puffin's that some snakekind kept as beasts of burden. These two in particular lacked the spirited gait of their kind and seemed quite sluggish, old and perhaps even frail. Their thin bodies and dull black feathers were mostly covered by a cascading black caparison of black silk embroidered with tiny mauve crystals that tinkled as their lanky talons advanced through the leaf and root covered road. On their heads they wore horse tacks with large blinders and a plumed headdress that obscured most of their faces and made them seem more at home at a parade than in the middle of the Kergulean jungle... Even the carriage they pulled, a large and blackened thing that looked like it could have been used to transport a small dragon once upon a time when the wood was not all moldy and creaking and threatening to fall apart even without any encouraging from the bumpy road it trundled across, would have been more at home in a circus.

Regardless, the birds seemed unfazed by all the strange jungle sounds, the chirping of a myriad insects unknown to science and the eerie calls from wild animals large and small from behind the walls of green that surrounded them at either side, and continued their relentless march without showing any signs of ever slowing down. Adding to the jungle song, every few seconds like clockwork came a low 'boom' that made the pebbles in the floor dance and the bird's crystal embroidery jingle as Kirama, their saurian guide, lead the way ahead of them.

Dull, rhythmic booms announced the expedition's presence as Kirama led the way, several paces ahead of the rickety carriage and the strange avians pulling it. Though they were a new sight to the massive saurian, they had garnered no more than a cursory glance and quick sniff before she lost interest in them. The hired guards in her howdah, and the handful walking alongside the carriage had earned even less interest.

Kirama had been paid, and had promptly led the small group across the Moonleaf Fields, along a faint trail surrounded by tall grasses that occasionally reached the same height as her knees. She knew full well that few creatures would dare to risk provoking her, so she paid little attention to the grasses surrounding the group.

Ahead, she could make out on the horizon the Bones of the Earth, stabbing skyward, and although her steps never faltered, a sense of awe briefly swept over her. Just a single one of those bones was larger than any living thing she had ever seen. She snorted softly, dismissing the feeling. Their destination was a small village not far from the bones, and they were getting quite close.

Another hour or so passed before the village was in sight. A simple wooden palisade made of lashed together tree trunks surrounded the village, and several large huts could be seen within. A number of large forest-kin xeriin, primarily elephantine, although several bore signs of being hippo or rhino in nature, watched the approaching group in wary silence. In stark contrast to most of the village, a fox xeriin was seated near the village entrance, an enigmatic grin on his face as he watched the approaching group.
