Not for the first time, Charn glanced skyward with a scowl when the clouds drifted far enough to let the sun shine brightly in the sky. He was much more used to the reddish sky and fainter moonlight of Kurai. And he was much more comfortable working in his subterranean lair beneath his father's fortress.

But he had a good reason to be out here. He went back to working on excavating the pale crystal in front of him, looking up once more for a moment, and sighing softly to himself. "Just when I could really use her help, she's nowhere to be found," he muttered, gripping the crystal and slowly twisting it back and forth, loosening it. As he spoke, he heard a muffled series of squawks and grunts coming from a tightly-wrapped bundle laying on the ground nearby.

"Oh, pipe down. All that racket isn't going to help you," he grumped, stepping back from the crystal for a moment and brushing dirt off his scaly forepaws. He approached the slightly-wriggling bundle and checked its bindings, then, satisfied, he turned to a similar bundle that was lying still. Frowning, he nudged it gently, then nodded slightly when it twitched.

Then, once more, he gazed skyward, shielding his eyes as he looked around, not really paying much attention to his surroundings. "Hmph. Probably found herself some entertainment," he muttered.

Maud covered her eyes from the light as she gazed skyward, she'd wandered a little too far it seemed as she looked around for something, or someone perhaps to entertain her. She shrugged unable to gleam anything of particular interest to her yet, then turned placing her sword back in its hilt by her hip she headed back to Charn.

She followed the trail of energy she could feel emanating from him and something else, until her ears could hear the squawks and grunts, and she made her way over to Charns side. "Here let me help." She muttered to him, her voice as it ever was deep for a female, though she only used the full effects of it when needed, as she used her magic to feel where this crystal was in relation to the ground around it then using her magic , her own strength and Charns help, the crystal, with a grind of stone was finally free. She stayed standing looking fairly defensive to say the least, she turned to look at Charn then the bundles. "How are our, friends doing?" She asked gently, keeping watch of the area.

Charn glanced at Maud as she returned to his side, nodding slightly as he turned his attention back to the crystal. Together, the two of them managed to free it from the ground. Once it was free, the demon-sphinx hefted it off the ground and carried it a couple paces before setting it down next to the two bundles. He shot another glance skyward, then huffed softly before turning his golden gaze towards the lich.

"About as well as can be expected. For the moment, at least," he replied, scowling slightly as the more active bundle began twitching again. He padded over to it, and aimed a kick that landed with a dull thump, accompanied by a gasp and wheezing breathe. "Don't interrupt he," he growled before padding back to the crystal after grabbing an auger from a small bundle.

"You make an ideal research assistance for me. It's so hard to find good ones when I'm away from home," he remarked as he drilled into the crystal's core. After making a deep hole, he retrieved a long metal rod that ended in what looked like a mix between a drill and a scoop. he slid it into the crystal, and gave it a few quick twists before extracting it, eyes glinting as he studied the crystal fragment he'd extracted.

"Most end up dying of some plague or another before they've lost their use," he added as he removed what appeared to be a glass sphere filled with a multi-hued cloud from the small bundle. Taking the sphere gently in his forepaw, he gently pressed the crystal against its surface. The sphere absorbed the crystal, which rapidly dissolved inside the sphere, adding a pure white color to the cloud.

More than one rumor and tome strewn throughout the archives of Millirand hinted at the magical properties to the White Plains' crystal fields. The various samples Elias had taken proved to be nothing more than above average foci for light and depressingly poor catalysts for any visual illusion spell written within his grimoire. Elias had concluded two possibilities for the nature of the crystals: Either they were a sham, or none of his samples were pure or cut nearly well enough to prove itself a decent catalyst.

That said, the White Plains were a beautiful landscape rolling hills covered in pure white grass and rock, giving the land an almost cloud like texture as the towering spires of white crystal reflected a kaleidoscope of rainbows in the morning and evening suns. The warmth ignited in Elias stomach when he first saw evening rainbows had made easily made the trip worth Elias' troubles.

A pair of voices drifted over the next hill as Elias hiked along. Something about research assistant and usefulness. With an extra little hop in his step, Elias strode to the top of the hill. His eyes were greeted by a beautiful woman and some sort of demonic-looking catlike beast none of his tomes had mentioned in the past. The wizard's feet pulled him back a step before he noticed bundles of crystals, each immediately seeming to be more pure than the samples Elias had worked with before. With a cautious breath, Elias stepped forward to introduce himself.

"Hey there," Elias called as he all but dashed down the side of the hill, stumbling a bit as he reached the bottom. "I didn't expect to see any other travelers around here." He eyed the bundles of crystals for a second and refrained from poking at them. "I'll start by introducing myself: I'm Elias, a scholar who is rather interested in these crystal formations."

Maud watched Charn as he kicked one of the more active bundles, needless to say she rather enjoyed the fact that she was dealing with someone with a similar mindset. "I'm glad to be of some use." She said then watched Charn work with keen interest she was about to reply to Charn mentioning how he'd lost prior assistants to plague, when she noticed they had company as she watched the man come closer to them both without looking like he'd been that concerned about either of them. She shot Charn a look but was keeping most her watch on the man who introduced himself as Elias. "I am Maud, this is Charn." She said her voice soft as she watched Elias not wanting him to interrupt Charns work too much.
